How long does GAP insurance last?

How long does GAP insurance last? For the GAP policies described here, there is no single standard number of years. Your cover lasts from the cover start date to the cover end date shown in your policy schedule, unless the policy ends earlier.

That distinction matters because the scheduled end date is not the only way cover can finish. A cancellation, a successful total loss claim being paid, or the vehicle ceasing to meet an eligibility requirement that applies during the policy can bring cover to an earlier end.

Insureworks Ltd is an appointed representative of Your Company Matters Ltd and distributes GAP insurance on a non-advised basis. Financial & Legal Insurance Company Limited is the insurer. Insureworks does not underwrite the policy and does not pay claims.

This page sets out how the term works rather than telling you what to do with it. Whether to keep a policy running, cancel it or let it reach its end date is a decision for you to make on your own circumstances, and Is GAP Insurance Worth It? How To Work It Out For Your Car works through the figures involved. What any policy pays towards is subject to the terms, limits, conditions and exclusions set out in its own documents.

Where do the GAP insurance start and end dates come from?

The dates that matter are in your policy schedule. The May 2026 Insurance Product Information Documents for Return to Invoice, Vehicle Replacement and Contract Hire state that cover starts and ends on the dates shown in the policy schedule.

That means there is no reliable answer based on a general assumption about how many years GAP insurance lasts. The supplied product documents do not give a standard term length, so the correct source for your own policy duration is your schedule.

Your policy schedule therefore answers two separate questions: when cover becomes active and when it is due to finish. The scheduled end date applies unless something happens during the term that causes the cover to end sooner.

What can end a GAP policy early?

Reaching the cover end date is one way for a GAP policy to finish, but it is not the only one. For these policies, three circumstances are particularly important when looking at how long the cover actually remains in place:

  • You cancel the policy.
  • A successful total loss claim is paid.
  • The vehicle ceases to meet an eligibility requirement that must be satisfied for the duration of the policy.

The second point can be easy to overlook. A policy may have time left between the date of a total loss claim and the cover end date shown on the schedule, but that does not mean the remaining time continues once a successful claim has been paid.

Ongoing eligibility is also important because cover is not simply established once and then left unchanged regardless of what happens. Requirements that apply throughout the coverage period need to continue to be met.

What happens after a successful total loss claim is paid?

A particularly important point is that the policy ends when a successful total loss claim is paid. It does not keep running until the original cover end date simply because there was time left on the schedule.

It also does not transfer to a replacement vehicle. Once the successful total loss claim has been paid, the existing GAP policy has reached its end and the replacement vehicle is not covered by the old policy.

This is different from thinking of the policy as a pot of cover that remains available for a fixed number of months regardless of whether a claim has already been settled. The payment of the successful total loss claim ends the policy, even where the scheduled cover end date would otherwise have been later.

For example, if the policy schedule shows a future cover end date but a successful total loss claim is paid before then, the later date does not keep the policy alive. There is no remaining period of cover under that policy for the replacement vehicle.

What happens if you cancel GAP insurance?

You may cancel the insurance at any time, but the refund depends on when you cancel and whether a claim has been made. The May 2026 product documents set out separate arrangements for cancellation within the first 14 days and cancellation after that period.

When you cancel Refund Conditions
Within 14 days Full refund No claim has been made and you do not intend to make one
After 14 days Pro-rata refund based on the remaining period of insurance No claim has been made

Cancellation is handled through the insurance broker from which the policy was purchased. Once the policy is cancelled, its original scheduled end date no longer represents the period for which cover remains in force.

The distinction between the two refund arrangements is important. A cancellation within 14 days can qualify for a full refund under the stated conditions, while a cancellation after 14 days can qualify for a refund calculated according to the remaining period of insurance.

What if your motor insurance changes mid-term?

Comprehensive motor insurance is not just something that matters on the date the GAP policy starts. You must have and maintain a comprehensive motor insurance policy throughout the coverage period.

If that motor policy lapses during the GAP insurance term, the ongoing requirement is no longer being met. The same issue arises if the motor cover changes so that it is no longer comprehensive.

In other words, having comprehensive motor insurance when the GAP policy first began does not permanently satisfy the requirement. Its status during the policy term matters as well, so a mid-term change is a current coverage issue rather than merely a detail about how the policy originally started.

This is one reason the scheduled dates alone do not tell the whole story about how long effective cover lasts. The policy can have a future end date on the schedule while an ongoing condition affecting cover is no longer being met.

Eligibility has to continue during the policy

When And How Can You Get GAP Insurance? covers this in full. Eligibility also matters beyond simply knowing the start and end dates. You are responsible for ensuring the vehicle continues to meet the eligibility criteria that apply for the duration of the policy.

At the start of cover, the stated eligibility criteria include that the vehicle must:

  • have been purchased less than 180 days before the policy start date;
  • be under 10 years old;
  • be valued between £5,000 and £125,000; and
  • never previously have been declared a total loss or write-off.

A vehicle previously declared a total loss or write-off is not eligible for these policies. The May 2026 product information also identifies the purchase timing, age and vehicle value requirements as eligibility restrictions.

Some eligibility facts describe circumstances that are established when the policy starts, such as when the vehicle was purchased. Other requirements, including maintaining comprehensive motor insurance and continuing to satisfy applicable eligibility conditions, remain relevant while the cover is running.

If an eligibility condition that needs to continue throughout the policy stops being met, that can affect whether cover remains in force. This is another reason the cover end date on its own cannot be treated as a guarantee that the policy will remain effective until that date regardless of changes during the term.

What happens when the scheduled GAP insurance term ends?

If the policy has not already ended earlier, cover finishes on the cover end date in the policy schedule. The end of that period does not itself generate a GAP insurance payment, because the policy responds to an eligible total loss claim rather than simply reaching its final date.

There is also no basis in the May 2026 IPIDs for assuming that cover automatically carries on beyond the scheduled end date. The documents provided for these products do not state a typical term length or provide a standard extra period beyond the date recorded in the schedule.

That makes the schedule especially important when comparing the insurance period with how long you expect to have the vehicle, finance agreement or lease. The factual answer for an existing policy remains the same: cover ends on the date shown in the schedule unless it has already ended earlier.

Does policy duration work differently for the three GAP products?

Insureworks distributes three GAP insurance products covered by the supplied documentation: Return to Invoice, Vehicle Replacement, and Contract Hire & Lease. They provide different types of GAP protection, but their duration is still determined by the relevant policy schedule rather than by a standard term that applies to every product.

The products deal with different financial situations:

  • Return to Invoice cover relates to the difference between an eligible motor insurance settlement and the relevant original invoice price or lender settlement, subject to the policy terms and maximum benefit.
  • Vehicle Replacement cover relates to the difference between the motor insurance settlement and the cost of an eligible like-for-like replacement, subject to the policy terms and maximum benefit.
  • Contract Hire & Lease cover relates to an eligible shortfall between the motor insurance settlement and the remaining lease or contract hire liability, subject to the policy terms and maximum benefit.

Those differences explain what each policy is designed to cover following an eligible total loss. They do not provide a different shortcut for calculating how long the policy lasts, because the relevant start and end dates are still the ones recorded in the schedule.

What to remember if a total loss happens during cover

A total loss can lead to a GAP claim where the policy terms and claim conditions are met. The product documents require the claim process to be supported with the necessary information, and the required claim documents must be provided within 120 days of the total loss.

The key points are:

  • notify the relevant claims handler promptly after a total loss;
  • provide the required claim documents within 120 days of the total loss; and
  • provide information reasonably required to validate the claim.

The 120-day requirement concerns the provision of claim documents. If the total loss results in a successful GAP claim and that claim is paid, the policy ends at that point rather than continuing until the scheduled cover end date.

That final point is central to understanding how long GAP insurance lasts in practice. The schedule sets the planned period of cover, but a successful paid total loss claim brings that particular policy to an earlier end and the policy does not move across to a replacement vehicle.

FAQs about how long GAP insurance lasts

Can I tell how long my GAP insurance lasts from the type of policy?

No standard number can be taken from the product name alone. Return to Invoice, Vehicle Replacement and Contract Hire & Lease policies use the cover start date and cover end date shown in the relevant policy schedule.

Does GAP insurance continue after a successful total loss claim?

No. Once a successful total loss claim has been paid, the policy ends and does not continue for the rest of the originally scheduled term.

The policy also does not transfer to a replacement vehicle. The remaining time that may have appeared on the original schedule does not become cover for the replacement.

Can I cancel GAP insurance after the first 14 days?

Yes, the policy may be cancelled at any time. After the first 14 days, a pro-rata refund based on the remaining period of insurance applies where no claim has been made, and cancellation is arranged through the broker from which the policy was purchased.

Within 14 days, the refund is instead a full refund provided no claim has been made and you do not intend to make one. These are separate cancellation arrangements rather than a single refund rule.

What happens if my comprehensive motor insurance stops?

Maintaining comprehensive motor insurance is an ongoing requirement for the GAP cover. If the motor policy lapses or changes so that it is no longer comprehensive, that requirement is no longer being met.

This matters during the policy, not just on its first day. The fact that comprehensive cover existed when the GAP insurance started does not make a later lapse irrelevant.

Can a vehicle that was previously written off have this GAP cover?

No. A vehicle that has previously been declared a total loss or write-off is not eligible for these policies.

This is one of the stated vehicle eligibility requirements. The other starting criteria include the 180-day purchase requirement, an age of under 10 years and a value between £5,000 and £125,000.

How long do I have to provide documents for a GAP claim?

Required claim documents must be provided within 120 days of the total loss. The policy documents also require information needed to validate the claim.

If that claim is successful and paid, the payment brings the GAP policy to an end. It does not remain active until the later cover end date shown on the original schedule.
